Durring the time of its invention the south was dependant on the production of cotton. The growth of cotton affected the entire world. During the time period of the 1790's the northern part of the united states had textile mills, but the south did not because they had slaves to do the work for them. The slaves proved to be too slow and cotton production in the south was low for the United states needs. Little did any americans know within a few months, the cotton industry would be changed forever.

The Invention
During the South's time of slower production(1790's) of cotton a man by the name of Eli Whitney came to the south and in just seven months, changed the way cotton would be produced. Eli invented a machine by the name of the cotton gin. This machine separated the cotton seed from the short-staple cotton fiber. It could generate up to fifty pounds of clean cotton daily. The machine increased the cotton industry in the United States, especially the south. After the invention of the cotton gin, the hundreds of man hours that were contributed into separating cotton seeds were then equal to one day of the cotton gin running. Later on the cotton gin became horse or water powered. Soon after, cotton became the number one selling textile in the world.

How It Works
The cotton gin is consisted of spiked teeth on a mounted boxed revolving cylinder. When someone would turn the crank the machine it would pull the cotton fiber through small slotted openings. From there it would separate the seeds from the lint. Also, a rotating brush would remove the excess lint from the rotating spikes.
